LANDON, SOPHIA, AND LEAH (reporting for Eddie)Have a very happy and safe Thanksgiving Break!
When we get back from break we will begin Map testing. If your child is looking for something to do over break Khan Academy Mappers is available as well as IXL Math and Language Arts. I will also add a few reading comprehension assignments into Google Classroom. Math In math we have started Chapter 6. Multiplication facts 6,7,8, and 9. Last year they should have focused on 0-5. Please have your child practice their facts each night. Reading These last two weeks we have started learning vocabulary words that your child will find in many of the books they read. We are using fabulous picture books to learn the vocabulary. So far we have read, Miss Nelson is Missing and The Spooky Tail of Prewitt Peacock. By now you should have seen word study words come home. If you haven't seen the words then please ask your child about them. Your child should be sorting them by word pattern and learning the words each night. This should only take a few minutes. It has taken us two weeks to start our routine in the classroom. Students are using a separate Google Classroom for word study called Words with Friends. The routine includes sorting words, speed sorting words with a timer, and quizzing each other during Buddy Study. Each week students will be tested over ten of the words they have practiced. Writing In writing we have been focusing on personal narratives and writing about our own experiences. The focus is on a moment within their day, not the entire day. Writing is another activity your child can engage in over break. Happy Thanksgiving! Noaki, Emily, and Leah Reporting *Excuse the sideways photo It is an iMovie glitch I'm trying to fix. Please enjoy the first Class Vlog from Emily, Naoki, and Leah. Landon and Billy on camera. October is finally here and the weather is changing throughout the day. Please make sure your child has layers to take off or to put on depending upon the temperature fluctuation. The heat will be on soon.
Math Students are finishing up Chapter 3- Addition to 10,00. We will review on Monday and the test will be on Tuesday. It was a quick chapter and students have been reviewing adding larger numbers with and without regrouping. Wednesday we will start Chapter 4-Subtraction to 10,000 with or without regrouping. Reading We started our nonfiction unit this week. Students have been learning to read nonfiction articles with a deeper understanding. Along with teaching our Schoolwide curriculum, students are learning to *Notice and Note specific details and ask questions about why the author wrote the article or book. They will be learning several signpost- Contrast and Contradictions, Extreme or Absolute Language, Numbers and Stats, Quoted words, and Word Gaps, to understand and create meaning. This week we started by asking Big Questions- What surprised me? and What did the author think I already knew? Students are reading and very engaged. Our discussion have been meaningful and thoughtful. Next week we will cover the 3rd Big Question, What challenged, or confirmed what I already knew?, and then start learning the signposts. *Notice and Note by Kyleen Beers & Robert Probst. Time For Kids- Students have been practicing how to find evidence in the text to answer questions. These are hard and it is a hard concept to understand. I am sending home a few for you to review. Students took these with partners. Next week they will try one on their own and I will use them throughout the year. This is an important skill to learn. Please understand it takes lots of practice to do these with 100% accuracy. Writing What a great group of writers! Students are working on completing their first published stories. If your child show you their story on Google Docs please refrain from editing it for them. We are working through the revision and editing process in class. Your child needs to learn and recognize their mistakes to become better writers. Social Studies/Science In social studies students are continuing to research their Midwest state and create a presentation to share with the class. We hope to have these completed in the next week. In the meantime, we are starting our science unit on weather. Students learned about primary and secondary sources in the LMC last week and on Friday they picked a severe weather photo to inspire research. Have a wonderful week! |
